GENERAL APPEARANCE
Athletic without being heavy
The standard describes a well-balanced dog of medium size and bone, solid and muscular without being coarse. Its structure should allow it to work with agility, endurance and rapid changes of direction.
Overall quality and balance are more important than seeking particularly large or small specimens.
Head and expression
Alert and intelligent expression. Eyes may be brown, blue or amber, including combinations or variations in colour.
Movement
Smooth, free and easy. It should show agility and the ability to change direction or speed quickly.
Tail
It may be naturally short or of another length depending on the individual and the regulations in each country.
COAT AND COLOUR
A functional coat with plenty of variety
The coat is medium in length and texture, straight or wavy, and suited to different climatic conditions. The amount of undercoat may vary with climate and season.
These colours may appear with or without white markings and/or tan points. Colour must never take priority over health, temperament and function.
TEMPERAMENT
A companion that needs to take part
Its herding history explains an attentive, sensitive personality oriented towards working with people.
It understands patterns and learns quickly. It needs clear, kind and consistent training.
It can engage enthusiastically when there is a task or activity and relax calmly when it is with its family.
It often forms a strong relationship with its family. Rather than being busy constantly, it wants to participate and remain close to its people.
It may be reserved with strangers. Good socialisation helps develop confidence and balance.
It can excel in herding, obedience, agility, search work, scent work and many other activities.
It responds better to trust and positive reinforcement than to harsh or repetitive methods.
